Cross Section Page

The Superstructure Cross section parameters page is used to define the cross sectional dimensions along the bridge. The cross section is a concrete deck and Built-up plate girder I-section.

SettingDescription
Number of girders Define the number of steel girders used for the composite bridge.
Girder type Define the sectional shape of the steel girders used. This field is for beam type selection. Select a beam type from the list. To access the list, click the down-arrow button to the immediate right of the field, the list of available beams will appear.
Girder ID This field is the name of the section within the Girder type chosen. Select a Girder ID from the list.

I-Girder (I-shaped cross-section).

  • HE - European wide flange beams which includes HEA, HEB, HEM steel profiles : have parallel flange surfaces and approximate equal width and depth 100-1000(mm).According to Euro norm 53-62, Tolerances: EN10034:1993.
  • IPE - European steel i-beams have parallel flange surfaces and height 80-600(mm): according to Euro norm 19-57; Tolerances: EN10034:1993.
  • IPN - European standard beams (I-shaped cross-section) have a slope 14% on the inner flange surfaces and range of height 80-600(mm).

I-GirderS

Values are presented in either Imperial (inch-pound) units or SI (metric) units according to ASTM A6/A6M.

S - American Standard Beam (I-shaped cross-section) have a slope on the inner flange surfaces.

I-GirderHP

  • HP - Bearing Pile (H-shaped cross-section) have parallel flange surfaces and equal web and flange thicknesses.

U-Girder (channels)

  • UPE- European channel with parallel flanges have depth 80-400(mm). Dimensions: DIN 1026-2:2002-10; Tolerance: EN 10279:2000.
  • UNP- European channels with taper flanges have depth 80-400(mm). Dimensions: DIN 1026-1; 2000. Tolerance: EN 10279:2000.
  • U - European channels with taper flange have depth 40-65(mm).Tolerance: EN 10279:2000.

L-Girder (L-shaped cross-section)

  • Equal leg angles. Dimensions: EN 10056-1:1998.

C-Pipe ( Structural hollow sections)

Hot finished circular sections. Dimensions:  EN10210 S355J2H.Outside diameter smaller than 200 mm.

SettingDescription
Deck width Define the width of the cast-in-place deck measured from edge to edge
Deck depth Define the thickness of the cast-in-place deck.
Dist. girder begin Define the distance from Center Line of support to girder at begin of span.
Dist. girder end Define the distance from Center Line of support to girder at end of span.
Dist. bearing begin Define the distance from Center line of support to bearing at begin of span.
Dist bearing end Define the distance from Center line of support to bearing at end of span.

Span layout details

The Section Layout details dialog box allows you to define the layout of the girders. Beam numbering is based on looking down station, and Beam 1 being referenced as the most-left girder with all other beams following sequentially in each span. The Distance from previous beam at start or end of each span is measured along the deck width. Checks will be made in case of skew piers so that each girder is situated onto the pier cap length.

The drawing shows the plan view of the span on which you are positioned with the piers at begin and end of span in the darker grey color, the lighter grey represents the deck surface. The selected girder from the upper table is highlighted in blue.
